As well as being one of the oldest boroughs of London, Southwark is home to one of the capital’s most renowned food havens: Borough Market. But that’s not all…
In Southwark you’re well and truly spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a lunch spot. Here are our top picks for where to grab a bite to eat on your lunch break. Borough Market You can’t work in Southwark without sampling food from Borough Market at least once. It’s famous all over the UK for its 1,000-year heritage and diverse food offering from local producers. Whether you fancy an American-style burger or an authentic Thai curry, Bankside’s Borough Market has got you covered. As well as street food, you’ll find baked goods, fruit and veg, flowers, and much more. So you can pick up some essentials while you’re there too. Mercato Metropolitano This new Italian market in Elephant and Castle is a hotspot for foodies seeking a taste of the Mediterranean and beyond. Mercato Metropolitano launched in an old paper factory and offers more than 40 vendors. One of these being the ‘best pizza maker in Naples’. There’s also a fishmonger, coffee roaster, butcher, cheesemonger, a bakery and a micro-brewery. It’s close to both Elephant & Castle and Borough tube stations. Flat Iron Square In the heart of London Bridge lies one of the newest additions to Bankside – the vibrant cultural hub that is Flat Iron Square. Whichever type of culinary experience you’re seeking, from quick light bites to three course meals, it offers all from three restaurants and over ten street food vendors. You can reach Flat Iron Square in five minutes from London Bridge and Borough tube stations. Hixter Bankside Just up the road from Borough Market is Hixter Bankside. What was once a metal box factory is now a unique dining space with an open-plan kitchen. It’s perfect for meat and fish lovers and easily reachable from both Southwark and Borough tube stations. The Table Café Also practically on the doorstep of Borough Market is the Table Café. The laid-back eatery has a canteen-style feel and offers everything from breakfast to an evening meal. It’s only a five-minute walk from the London Bridge tube station and 15 minutes from Waterloo.
