Net zero carbon: what does it mean and how can your business achieve it?

With the UK hosting the COP26 climate conference later this year, they are encouraging 100,000 businesses to make a zero-carbon pledge for 2030, ‘40 or beyond. But what does this mean for you and your business? And how is it really helping the climate crisis?

Fora is joined by CEO and Founder of the Planet Mark, Steve Malkin, along with other expert panelists, to cut through the jargon and discuss how businesses can achieve net zero carbon emissions.

About Steve Malkin:

As an inspiring communicator with over 10 years of experience in sustainability, Steve has encouraged hundreds of companies globally to see the business benefits of measuring their environmental and social impact.

Steve has a wealth of experience across several industries: from starting his career in engineering to running his own marketing and communication firm. He is passionate about empowering businesses and individuals to make meaningful change and a positive impact on the planet and society.

Steve has spoken at several business and sustainability events, including presentations to the Governor of the Bank of England and Lord Mayor of London, at universities and colleges, for the Institute of Directors, Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and other business institutions.

About Simon Wyatt:

Simon leads Cundall’s building physics, health, wellbeing and sustainability team. He is a member of the UK Green Building Council’s Members Advisory Committee, the British Council for Offices (BCO) Environment, Social & Governance Group (ESG) and chair of the CIBSE Knowledge Generation Panel. He has authored numerous papers and presents at national and international conferences on net-zero carbon, whole-life carbon, health and wellbeing and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

About Judi Havelock:

Judi is an experienced Sustainability and Business Transformation consultant, coupling her deep expertise in developing and leading transformation projects and programmes at Unilever, Heineken and Ernst & Young (management consultancy) with her knowledge and passion for sustainable business. In this remit she has created, launched and leads the ‘Zeroby30’ advisory service in partnership with the Planet Mark. ‘Zeroby30’ aims to catalyse accelerated climate action by creating a ‘strategy-into-action’ recommendation, multi-year roadmap and business case for organisations ambitious to reach net zero carbon by 2030. In parallel, she has supported the Eden Project in refreshing their 5 year corporate Sustainability Strategy as well as creating a recommended approach to running ‘the world’s most sustainable marathon’. Judi holds a BA (First Class) in Maths from Oxford University and holds qualifications in Business Sustainability management from the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and the UN’s course in Climate Action: Solutions for a Changing Planet.

About Lina Makrodimitri

Lina Makrodimitri joined Norman Disney & Young in 2017. She heads up NDY’s sustainability team in London which is part of NDY’s Global Sustainability Group and works directly with client organisations and affiliate groups to help them understand and respond to the full magnitude of sustainability challenges.

Lina has extensive experience on environmentally sustainable design of high-profile projects within the UK and abroad. She is qualified with a PhD in Sustainability in the Built Environment and has previously completed an MSc in Environmental Design and Engineering. She is a Chartered Engineer and a full Chartered Architect with CIBSE and RIBA.

She is heavily involved in establishing strategic sustainability initiatives for portfolio level assets and producing building level environmentally sustainable design solutions. Lina also has extensive experience in benchmarking assessments of buildings to demonstrate their sustainably credentials. She consults across multiple building sectors informing and continuously monitoring holistic sustainability targets that are bespoke to each project and client.
