Fora Recommends: What to do after work near Borough and Southwark
From street food markets to theatre performances, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your workday evenings in Borough and Southwark.
When you work in London, there’s so much to do in the evening. It’s especially true for Southwark and Borough, which are hubs for culture and food. Whether your tummy is rumbling or you want to try out something different, here are a few of our favourite Southwark places to unwind after a productive day of work. Southwark Playhouse Founded in 1993, the Playhouse is one of Southwark’s most loved theatres. It’s all about encouraging local people to get onstage, and it runs plays throughout the week. Book yourself some seats if you’re after a culture fix. Bankside Gallery Located just behind the Tate Modern in Bankside, this gallery is home to the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers (RE). It runs evening art classes and talks so, wherever your interests lie, there’s bound to be an event for you. Or just browse the giftshop for framed prints. Borough Market This is London’s oldest food market – it’s been around for over 1,000 years. From cakes, spices and street food to homeware and hair salons, Borough Market appears to have it all. The market, near London Bridge, closes at 6pm on Fridays so is a good spot for filling your stomach before ‘Friday drinks’ moves to nearby bars. You can enjoy your food guilt-free as the market makes sure no cardboard, paper, plastic, glass or wood goes to landfill. Flat Iron Square Flat Iron Square considers itself ‘London’s liveliest cultural hub’. Here, you can try a diverse selection of food, from Mediterranean to Vietnamese. The Monday-night quiz at the Après bar is an ideal opportunity to bond with co-workers and network over a drink. Flat Iron Square stays open till midnight, so you could make a night of it. If you feel like letting your hair down, book tickets for a gig in Omeara, just next door. Mercato Metropolitano Home to a food market, micro-brewery and community project space, Mercato Metropolitano is an ideal after-work destination. At 45,000 square feet, it’s a huge plot, and the eco-friendly market has over 40 sellers offering global food made with locally sourced ingredients. There are cookery and yoga classes to try out, along with music from 7:30pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Our Southwark offices are in a great location for enjoying the best of South London’s culture.
