Join us in the Observer newsroom for a thought-provoking Book Club evening with Simon Sebag Montefiore, bestselling author and historian.

Sebag Montefiore will explore the making of the modern Middle East, tracing the history of a region that has long been the source of religions, the prize of empires and the epicenter of conflict in our tumultuous world.

In his new book The Cauldron, Sebag Montefiore takes the reader on a spectacular journey from the Ottoman sultanate to the Trump presidency, offering a fresh and unique history of the entire region in all its diversity, from 1900 to the present day.

In this special event, we will discuss some of the questions Sebag Montefiore seeks to answer in the book: How did one extraordinary prince create Saudi Arabia? Why did the Arab Spring fall? Who was the last great Ottoman sultan? Could a two-state solution in Israel/Palestine ever work? The Cauldron tackles these and more.

The book will also be available to purchase on the evening, with a 20% discount on copies for subscribers to The Observer as part of the many benefits of our newly launched Culture Club.

We kindly ask for a £10 deposit to secure your spot – you’ll receive a refund when you attend, or if you cancel your ticket at least 48 hours before the event takes place. If not, your deposit will be donated to our charity partner Shelter from the Storm, supporting people experiencing homelessness in London.

*Please note that filming/photography may be taking place on site for the duration of this event for promotional and archival purposes. The photographs and recordings made are likely to appear on our website. If you would prefer not to be photographed please let the Fora team know on arrival to the event.
