Pride at Fora: Opening Doors
PRIDE AT FORA
Marking 50 years since the first UK Pride, this year, we’re looking back over the heritage and evolution of Pride; coming together to celebrate the progress made and the journey still to come.
Raising money for Opening Doors, the UK’s only dedicated charity providing activities, events, information and support services specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary or gender fluid, LGBTQ+ people over 50.
Creating an open platform for conversation, sharing personal stories, the challenges, ideas and innovations for the future of the LGBTQ+ community.
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Hosted by British comedian, actor and cabaret extraordinaire, Jonny Woo; look forward to shared personal stories and a chance to reflect on and celebrate the people who fought for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community today.
We will also be joined by author of 'Outrageous!', Paul baker, who will open the event with a 20 minute talk to set the scene for the panel. The full story of the infamous Section 28, the 1988 UK law banning the teaching 'of the acceptability of homosexuality' in schools, the shockwaves it sent through society and the movements it galvanised and that finally brought about its repeal in 2000s.
Based on detailed research, interviews with key figures - including Ian McKellen, Michael Cashman, and Angela Mason - and personal recollection, Outrageous! is an impassioned, warm, often moving account of unthinkable prejudice enshrined within the law and of the power of community to overcome it.
