Clerkenwell. A neighbourhood where heritage blends seamlessly with a growing independent restaurant and boutique scene. There’s a lot going on, but there’s also a lot of places to snap up a fabulous dinner.
Not the most obvious area to bag a bite to eat, but in a good way. Clerkenwell has some of the best hidden gems in the city and should be top of your dining hit list. Read on for our five top spots…
30 St Cross Street, EC1N 8UH Stumble off Leather Lane and you’ll find modern British restaurant, Anglo. The speciality here is simple, refined dishes, with a tasting menu on offer most of the week. Experience memorable dishes with the likes of tuna sashimi, sea bream and lamb. Don’t be fooled though, this is an unpretentious affair and the emphasis is very much placed on ingredients and flavour. Scale up with drinks pairings and make it a real night to remember.
71 Central Street, EC1V 8AB Just a couple of minutes from Old Street station you’ll find Palatino shining in its pizza and pasta glory. With industrial-style décor, this Roman-style eatery by Stevie Parle is the spot for casual dinners. Be sure to check out the deals on offer here… There’s even unlimited pasta to tuck into. If you’re a Fora Resident, you’ll benefit from a tidy discount and can even order ahead to eat at the bar or opt to takeaway.
29 Clerkenwell Green, EC1R 0DU Checked out The Culpepper in Aldgate? This modern pub is part of the same family. As gastro pubs go, this one is less on the humble side, putting seasonal ingredients to great use all year round. It’s a small menu, but each dish has been considered, and that accounts for a lot in flavour. Oh, and they do a pretty unforgettable roast if you’re in the neighbourhood on a Sunday (you should really try to be). Find The Green sandwiched between Farringdon and Barbican tube stations.
32 Exmouth Market, EC1R 4 An intimate spot with great authentic tapas to match. Be sure to try the lamb, the classic tomato bread and the padron peppers. The atmosphere here brings memories of Spanish holidays and nostalgia to the surface. Walk-ins can put their name down and receive a text when a table becomes available. Really like it here? Check out Moro next door to experience exquisite Spanish-North American flavours and the same atmosphere. Sushi Tetsu 12 Jerusalem Passage, EC1V 4JP A truly unique dinner spot in Farringdon, Sushi Tetsu is the place for a sushi experience you won’t forget. Husband and wife duo, Harumi and Toru Takaheshi head up the operation, with the objective of merging fresh ingredients with a relaxed environment. Leave your night in their trustworthy hands and it’ll be one to remember. Bookings are taken a week in advance by telephone, and tables must not exceed four. If you want to work closer to the evening food scene, our Fora Clerkenwell spaces can be found on Central Street and Dallington Street. Being a stone’s throw from the Barbican, Old Street and Farringdon means getting to us (and home) couldn’t be easier. Be sure to pay us a visit soon.
