Clerkenwell is a trove of design space, amazing agencies and quaint independent shops on intriguing streets. But, it’s got something else in its back pocket. It’s considered one of the city’s must-go gastronomic destinations (and we’re not arguing with that).
If you want great food quickly and without breaking the lunchtime budget, EC1 is calling your name from Old Street, Barbican, Farringdon and beyond. Mother Clucker 59-61 Rosebery Ave, Farringdon, London EC1R 4SD Get your hands on this butter-milk soaked, twice battered fried chicken at their Exmouth Market outpost. Mother Clucker started their journey as a pop-up in 2013. Fast-forward to now and they’re a London institution. Try for yourself and enjoy an indulgent lunch, you deserve it. Berber & Q Shawarma Bar 46 Exmouth Markert, EC1R 4QE Pop in for a lunch meeting, or whenever you’ve got that little bit longer to graze on amazing mezze, humus and pita. If you don’t get to taste it all, be sure to come back for an evening sitting and dive into the rotisserie chicken and flank steak. For lunch, go sharing style to get a real taste for the offering, or opt for a rice bowl if sharing’s not your thing. Kin 8 Leather Lane, EC1N 7TT Big flavour doesn’t come up at a big cost at this healthy family run restaurant. You’ll have change from a tenner if you choose pad thai, pad kee mao (drunken noodles), Singapore noodles and dumpling soup. Keep a look out for the weekly specials too. Oh, and Kin meets ‘eat’ in Thai. Perfect. Cubana 59 Charterhouse St, Farringdon, London EC1M 6HA Just near Farringdon, Cubana is one of few Cuban spots that we’ve encountered in the city, and it does the flavours justice. Pop in during the week for a bargain take-out feast from only £7. Choose from hot Cuban sandwiches, tortillas, casserole dishes and rice dishes. The plantain here is not to be missed. Leather Lane Market Leather Ln, Holborn, London EC1N 7TJ A true Clerkenwell establishment, we couldn’t leave Leather Lane off the list. Stalls that stand out to us are Yum Bowl, serving authentic Vietnamese rice bowls and soups. There’s something about a Greek wrap that is hard to resist. Try the lamb and halloumi wrap at Greek Expectations and we’re sure you’ll feel the same way. Other specialities include Tajima-Tei fo sushi, Oh’Lola for paella that packs a Spanish punch and Daddy Donkey for a new burrito spot (you can never have too many, right?). Plus, the market has been feeding the masses for a staggering 400 years, so you’ll even bag a bit of history on your lunch break. Clerkenwell certainly provides enough great foodie spots for you to part with your packed lunch, and we wouldn’t blame you. If you want to be closer to the action, check out our Clerkenwell workspaces to see how the space could work for your business.
