Find out why Shoreditch remains so popular for businesses, what kind of companies are in the area, and where they are choosing to work.

No longer just a playground for tech entrepreneurs, Shoreditch is now firmly established as one of London's most important business hubs. Freelancers and startups may still be drawn to the area’s cultural offering and sense of community, but SMEs, creative agencies and major corporations have also settled into the area, sustaining it as one of the capital’s most sought-after workplace destinations.

Why is Shoreditch so appealing for businesses?

Location

Its strategic location is a long-standing factor. Sandwiched between the finance district of the City and the artsy neighbourhoods of East London, Shoreditch offers both culture and clout, while being well connected to the rest of the city by bus, train and underground lines.

Talent

The location also helps resident companies unlock a diverse array of talent, from business leaders and venture capitalists to content creators and tech innovators. Since emerging as London’s ‘Tech City’ in the 2010s, Shoreditch has hosted countless fintech companies, digital agencies, tech accelerators, AI firms and software specialists, creating a deep pool of tech talent.

Lifestyle

A growing workforce wants places to explore with colleagues and clients, leading to the proliferation of fine dining spots, upmarket bars, art galleries and independent boutiques. In modern-day Shoreditch, you are just as likely to stumble across a white-tablecloth restaurant as an old-school pub reverberating with live music.

Why do businesses choose coworking space?

Coworking offers access to professional workspace without the commitment of a traditional office lease, which appeals to many businesses. Depending on the membership, you may be able to use shared desks, dedicated workstations, meeting rooms, breakout spaces and building amenities, while benefiting from a flexible agreement and a ready-made business community.

For freelancers, this can provide structure and networking opportunities. For startups and growing businesses, it offers room to scale without committing to a long-term lease.

When it comes to SMEs and growing companies, coworking can provide access to meeting rooms, event spaces and workplace facilities, without the operational burden of managing a traditional office.

Creatives

Given their easterly location, The Black & White Building and 81 Rivington Street are a natural fit for creatives in London. Both workplaces are located on the outskirts of Hoxton, a neighbourhood famed for its vibrant art scene, buzzing bars and creative community. Princelet Street is also an attractive option for creatives due to its proximity to the legendary Brick Lane; a cultural hub that’s forever evolving.

Startups

The aforementioned Silicon Roundabout is at the epicentre of London’s Tech City, so working at the nearby White Collar Factory or Albert House can expose startups to many of the key players in the community. A host of tech giants, including Amazon, Adobe, Meta, Google, Cisco and Microsoft, have all established a presence in Tech City in recent times, helping startups connect with established global firms.

When a company expects to increase its headcount, having a workplace provider that allows members to scale up their office space is a key advantage. At Fora, growing companies can expand to other spaces and floors in the same building and even spread their presence across nearby buildings in the portfolio. Great Eastern Street offers one such opportunity in Shoreditch with two new floors , while Albert House and Montacute Yards count on six and seven floors respectively, bringing ample office space to the area.

Community and network focused

For companies who prioritise community and networking, Montacute Yards offers a perfect base. Coworking in Shoreditch: FAQs

Is Shoreditch a good place for startups?

Shoreditch is perhaps London’s leading place for startups. From Silicon Roundabout to the wider Tech City, the area has a long-standing startup culture and helps to connect those within industry, from entrepreneurs, scale-ups and SMEs to fintech companies, AI firms and large corporations.

How much does coworking cost in Shoreditch?

To access multiple coworking spaces in the Fora collection with Fora Roam, average prices are around £450 per month, while owning a dedicated desk, chair and locker with Fora Owned averages around £600. These memberships are highly flexible, agreed on a monthly rolling basis.

To work in a private space via Fora Office, rates vary depending on size, location, amenities and contract terms. Fora’s sales team can provide a detailed quote when contacted on 020 7866 5000 or [email protected].

What's the difference between coworking and managed offices?

Coworking allows people to move between shared desk spaces, as well as other office amenities like breakout areas, cafés and terraces. This level of access can be specific to one building or granted across multiple buildings.

Managed offices are private office spaces within a building. While there may be open access coworking areas elsewhere in the same building, access to the managed office is exclusive to a company, its guests and Fora’s Member Experience team.

What is the difference between a hot desk and a dedicated desk?

A hot desk is open to anyone rather than being owned by a specific person or company. Fora Roam members have access to hot desks.

A dedicated desk is allocated to a member or company, giving them exclusive access to that spot. This is part of a Fora Owned membership.

Can growing businesses scale within a coworking space?

Yes, they can. Growing businesses often favour flexible workspaces like Fora because they can expand across office space, multiple floors and even multiple buildings. Fora contracts are designed for flexibility, allowing businesses to scale up their space if their headcount increases.

Which part of Shoreditch is best for businesses?

Traditionally, southern parts of Shoreditch were favourable for businesses because of their proximity to Liverpool Street and the City. However, the spread of companies and workspaces across the area means every part of Shoreditch can work effectively as a base for a business. From the cultural hub of Shoreditch High Street to the tech-oriented Old Street and Silicon Roundabout, modern, well-connected workplaces help multiple industries thrive in the area.
